Brian Powell

Brian Powell, PhD
Investigator

Brian Powell is a Professor in the Department of Oceanography at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His research focuses on the predictability of the ocean using a combination of numerical modeling and observations. His interests include applying data assimilation, machine learning, and other techniques to examine the role of varying dynamical scales on the prediction of both the physics and biogeochemistry of the complex inter-connected system that is the ocean environment. Dr Powell studies oceanic scales ranging from regional oceans with predictive time-scales of days to a month to decadal basin-scale. He is supported in his work by the Office of Naval Research (receiving a Young Investigator Award in 2009), National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, DARPA, and others.
