Biomes and Model Skill Evaluation

Investigator: Brian Powell, UH

I have been operating operational data-assimilative models of the Hawaiian region (covering Station ALOHA) for nearly 10 years, and am now developing a biogeochemical model of the region to produce a decadal reanalysis of the biogeochemistry at fine-scale around the main Hawaiian Islands from 2007 to the present day. In this I am collaborating closely with Dr Edwards at UCSC to apply data assimilation techniques derived by his group to the biogeochemistry around Hawaii leveraging the data available from the HOT and GRADIENTS programs. The results will be used to help evaluate model skill as well as contributing to a more detailed understanding of what controls the nature and distribution of biomes at and around Station ALOHA.
