A warm welcome to graduate student Cat Bannon from the Bertrand-Dalhousie Group who recently joined CBIOMES.
by Helen Hill for CBIOMES
HH: In summary, what are your research interests?
CB: I’m interested in metabolomics to investigate nutrient limitation and interactions within marine microbial communities. I’m particularly interested in the community dynamics surrounding B-vitamins like cobalamin (B12) and thiamine (B1).
HH: What is your role in Erin’s Group? What are you going to be working on for CBIOMES?
CB: I just started my fourth year as a PhD student in Erin’s lab! I investigate marine cobalamin cycle dynamics on the Scotian Shelf.
HH: What is your educational background (BS, MS?)
CB: I have a BSc from Mount Allison University (2017) and an
MSc from the University of Alberta (2019)
Story image: In her spare time she enjoys combing Maritime beaches for seaweed and finding the best cinnamon roll in Halifax. This picture finds Cat in her natural habitat: “The metabolite I work with (vitamin b12/cobalamin) is photo-sensitive so all extractions must be down in the dark with only dim red light to let me work! I’ve spent at least two months on my PhD in this exact condition!”
