CBIOMES Welcomes Kevin Egan

A warm CBIOMES-welcome to postdoc Kevin Egan who joins the UCSC group to work with Brian Powell.

by Helen Hill for CBIOMES

HH: In summary, what are your research interests?
KE: My doctoral research focused on using statistical-machine learning algorithms to automatically discover ordinary differential equations from data. Outside of system identification, I am generally interested in the application of statistical methods for scientific machine learning and the opportunity to better determine parameter estimates with data-driven techniques.

HH: What are you currently working on?
KE: I joined Powell Lab in March and am interested in using these methods to potentially identify alternative parameter estimates for the NPZ equations. I am also researching machine learning methods for data assimilation and their potential of fitting into the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) schema.

HH: What is your educational background (BS, MS?)
KE: I received my BA in Statistics from Wittenberg University, MS in Data Science from Northwestern University, and PhD in Engineering from Durham University.
