CBIOMES Welcomes Benedict Blackledge

A warm CBIOMES-welcome to postdoc who recently moved to the University of Liverpool to work with CBIOMES Scholar Chris Follett.

by Helen Hill for CBIOMES

HH: In summary, what are your research interests?
BB: My research focus is split between how physical ocean-atmosphere processes govern marine ecosystems as well as the analysis methods we use to work that out. Much of my current interest is in causal inference methods, which may be useful in understanding the kinds of complex systems that are common in ocean ecosystems and dynamics.

HH: What is your role in Dr. Follett’s group? What will you be working on for CBIOMES?
BB: I have joined Chris’s group as a postdoc, and the aim is to tackle a broad but fairly common question in many sciences: are predictive relationships in marine ecosystems necessarily causal relationships?

HH: What is your educational background (BS, MS)?
BB:  My background is originally in physical oceanography – I completed an MSci at Bangor University working with Prof. Mattias Green, before leaving academia for data-science. I am currently finishing a PhD at the University of Bristol with Dr Oliver Andrews, which looked at different methods for understanding dissolved oxygen dynamics and deoxygenation.
