We’re excited to welcome Finkel-Irwin Group postdoc Irene Romero Rodriguez to the CBIOMES community.
Irene Romero Rodriguez joins the CBIOMES community as a postdoctoral researcher in the Finkel–Irwin Group, bringing a deep interest in the cell biology of dinoflagellates. Her research focuses on understanding how these organisms regulate and transform their internal phosphorus (P) pools under varying environmental conditions—including changes in nutrient availability, temperature, and light. She is particularly intrigued by the role of polyphosphates and how these molecules help dinoflagellates adapt to their surroundings. Irene looks forward to working with Zoe to advance CBIOMES efforts to better characterize these cellular processes.
Originally from Spain, Irene completed her university studies in France, primarily at the Université de Bretagne Occidentale (Western Brittany University). She earned a bachelor’s degree in cellular, molecular, and physiological biology, followed by a master’s degree in microbiology with a specialization in marine biology. In December 2025, she defended her PhD at Ifremer in Brest, where she investigated the free‑living stage of Amoebophrya ceratii, a marine parasite that infects dinoflagellates. Her dissertation, “The free-living stage of Amoebophrya ceratii: the autonomous life of a marine parasite seeking a host,” explored the molecular and biochemical cell biology of this fascinating organism.
Outside the lab, Irene enjoys a wide range of activities—from arts and crafts and movie‑watching to trying out and practicing different sports.
Welcome, Irene!
