A warm welcome to Thomas Jackson who recently joined the Sathyendranath Group.
by Helen Hill for CBIOMES
Thomas Jackson is a Senior Scientist within the Earth Observation and Satellite Applications group at PML. His research for the last decade or so has centered around the creation and use of remote sensing data for ocean and climate science, particularly biogeochemistry and ocean optics. This has included work on the generation and validation of ocean color products, the improvement of bio-optical algorithms and primary production models, product uncertainty estimation, optical characterization of the global oceans, and the response of phytoplankton to climate forcing.
Thomas is involved in the end-to-end processing and quality control of data for open climate data records through international projects such as the ESA Climate Change Initiative and Copernicus Climate Change service. Recent work and research have been of interest/use to organizations such as the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the European Commission (Copernicus and Horizons 2020 Programmes), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). He has also enjoyed contributing to global scientific working groups for organizations such as IOCCG and GEO Blue Planet.
Thomas PhD (University of Oxford, 2014) concerned phytoplankton community structure, photophysiology, and primary production in the Atlantic Arctic. He holds a 2009 MEarthSci, First Class: University of Oxford (2009) and a BSc Earth Sciences, First Class: University of Oxford (2008.)
Story image: In his spare time Thomas enjoys mountain biking, paddleboarding, surfing, Dungeons & Dragons, tabletop games, and reading.
