Data and tools to define the biogeography of marine phytoplankton

We take three general approaches to address the CBIOMES goals of characterizing the biogeography of key marine microbes at basin and seasonal scales and identifying environmental drivers of these patterns. First, we developed the Simons Collaborative Marine Atlas Project (CMAP) to meet the needs of modelers and statisticians as well as those that generate observation data from research cruises by providing an open-source data portal that consists of cleaned, harmonized public datasets and analytic tools that enhance collaborations and data analysis. Second, we are expanding our biogeographical coverage of small phytoplankton (<8 um) to develop statistical models to characterize how physical and chemical drivers change the distributions, size structure, biological activity, and functional diversity of these small phytoplankton and use this information to test the Darwin mechanistic model. Third, we use our metatranscriptomics and metagenomics datasets collected on the SCOPE-Gradients cruises to develop new tools to identify gene clusters associated with key physiological and ecological traits used to model the biogeography of different species.
